Meet Grandma Green

Ooh doesnt she look strict? This is Grandma Green, she wasnt my real Great Grandmother, My Great Grandmother had too many children and found it difficult to manage and this lady lived in the same street and she took some of her children and looked after them.
But she was always known as Grandma Green, Im not sure where my real great great grandmother was, maybe she died so this lady stepped into that role. I wouldnt like to get on the wrong side of her though!

I see smiling eyes on this lady and to take on such a role she must have been a beautiful lady.
thanks for sharing all the photos and the stories.
I remember the coffins being draped...it was easter 1963 when my grandad died and because there was no fnnerals taking place until after easter grandad was laid out in the living room longer than the normal 3 days of respect...he had to be moved into the bedroom as it was too warm in the sitting room with the fire on.
I was 12 at the time and it still sticks with me.
It takes a special person to do that kind of job...I know i couldnt.

I know my uncles didnt like it and my dad helped out if they were busy but always said it wasnt for him, yet my mam always wanted to do it, but in those days women didnt get involved it was very much a mans job. I dont think it would be for me, as a proffesion although parts of the embalming process are interesting. Anyway crafting is much better! costs more tho! Jaqi x

Oh such lovely photos and aren't you fortunate that you still have them! I think Granny Green must have been a wonderful person to take on someone elses brood. They had to sit still for such a long time while their photos were being taken in those days and that's why they always look so grumpy!
Thanks for sharing Jaqi!

What a fabulous photo - yes she does look a bit fierce but I can see a twinkle in her eye (I bet she was a soft touch really LOL).

What a beautifully done photo. she must have been quite a lady to help with the children like that. Looks like she could be a tough cookie, though. In those days that was the norm. And I always find that in these old photos, the people always look so severe. Maybe that was a popular look for that day. Instead of "say cheese", perhaps the photographer said something else. Hmmm. wonder what.
